Provincial ITT and TTT

Guys. The Provincial ITT is coming up this Sat. in Canmore.

Register here.
Hope to see most of us there. It is a 40km test of speed. A perfect prep for any other race or tri coming up.

The TTT is on Sunday morning. It would great to put a team in.

I think we have Alex on board but I am not sure who else. I think Kirk has confirmed too but not sure. It would be cool to get a full 6 guys in our Cat5 division to have a team, but I will enter with you guys if you need me. So will Steve I think.

TRS is looking to put in a team of Cat2's with us I think, so I may do that. It would be Carson, Frank, Steve, and I so far I think.

Please leave a comment if you are racing the ITT, but more importantly if you would like to be part of the TTT team. Us we have a 'team' established, I will email you guys directly and get you working well together.

Thursday Night Ride?

Is anyone interested in going for a ride Thursday Night?

I'm up for any type of ride. We can do Cochrane hill repeats, maybe some sprint work, or just go for some mileage.

Please comment if you are interested and we could meet at the Bean around 6:00 if that works for everyone.

Stampede Road Race.

Well, Speed Theorists were well represented yesterday at the brutal Stampede Road Race. The course is always underestimated as there are no huge climbs, however there is rarely a flat section, it's always really hot, and the 5 laps (120km total) make for a tough count down.

We had:
Alex (A-Train), Rod, and Trev competing in 'Elite'
Kirk and Carl competing in 'Master A'
Paul competing in 'Master B'

TRS friends included Steve, Jared, Frank, and Carson
and a surprise showing was Don 'The' King riding for Bowcycle.

So all in all, we had our classifications covered.
Full results here. Some results are a little messed up, as Paul didn't DNF.

A tough day was had by everyone, but I'm pretty sure we all had a great time. Extra congrats to Alex and Rod for toughing it out and finishing the lapped course solo in the heat. That takes some mental fortitude!

Rob was a no show. But he was probably laying in a strange bed wondering how he was going to explain his new tattoo and his Stampede petting zoo 'incident' to his wonderful bride to be.

Next up on the calendar is Canmore Provincial ITT and TTT.

The photos were taken by Robert Haslam of the Crankmaster. These were taken on the South East corner (Start line).

Sunday: Stampede show time.

OK guys, this is the second biggest race of the season for us on Sunday.

A few of us are volunteering to sweep corners prior to the race. If you want to give us a hand, meet at my place with a broom and your bike stuff, at 8am. We'll head up, sign in, and go sweep corners for a bit.

If you're not into sweeping, then let's all meet at 10:30am in the parking lot of the community center where you sign in. We'll take a few pictures and I'll give you a briefing on the tough spots of the course and we'll all pump each other up.

It is Rob's stag on Sat. night. So he is touch and go for Sunday. Have a great time Rob.

Plan for the week....

Tues: I'm MTN biking. But does anyone want to lead a ride? Alex, Rob?

Wed: Cabin Ride

Thurs: 3 X Cochrane Hill... and this time, it's three...not two.

Fri: I'm MTN biking. But does anyone want to lead a ride?

Sat: I'm MTN biking. But maybe for the Cat5ers, do a light spin and rest up for Stampede.

Sun: Hit it hard for 120km at Stampede.

Please leave a comment and plan some rides together. Sorry about switching my focus to MTN for awhile, but Alex and Rob and hopefully James soon, will be leading rides. Guys, please post.

Foothills Charity Tri

First a disclaimer: Do not expect world cup racing excitment like that of my fellow Speed Theorists, my tris (so far) are of the more mundane variety. If that is not too off-putting, read on.

I did the Foothills Charity Tri in Okotoks Saturday morning. Strangely it was not hammering rain and howling wind like Arbour Lake a few weeks ago. Arbour Lake was a test for me to see what works and what doesn't in a tri. So some new changes included: 1)using wetsuit lube so as to allow me to get the damn thing off, and 2)springy elastic shoelaces, because I found numb hands + tying shoelace knots = extreme cursing & scaring volunteers.

Turnout looked pretty good - maybe 150+?

Short course: 500m swim, 20km bike, 5km run.

The water was quite warm, but it was nice to have a wetsuit for the cold morning. Washing machine at the start, but swallowed way less water than at Arbour Lake. Still, by the time the swim was over I had a sloshing full stomach and didn't need to drink for the rest of the race.

Stagger into transition 8th out of the water, wetsuit removal achieved with minimal grunting and swearing. Shoes on and then onto my favorite: the bike section. Roads alternated between smooth'n'sealed and Paris Roubaix pave. Felt good and hammer down, passed several to move up into second place.

Fast bike -run transition. Alas, found a problem with my new system. I guess when practicing slipping on the runners my feet had always been fairly dry. When pulling on the shoes with my clammy wet feet, the foot beds compacted forward around my toes. Upon beginning the run I had the sensation that my toes were being crushed in a vice. No time to lose, so I ran on despite a spot of discomfort.

2.5 km into the run and still holding second place I came to an unmarked Y in the path. Deciding the straighter arm was more likely correct I took off down it. About 150 meters on I heard a shout and stopped unsure if it was for me. At this point the next runner reached the Y and stopped also. We heard a shout again and saw a volunteer far down the other side that I had not taken. Showing some fine sportsmanship the 3rd place guy waited for me while I ran back to him and then we ran together for a bit before he dropped me. By the race end he had a good 20 seconds in hand.

3rd overall at 1hour and 2minutes! I was ecstatic with the result, and my wife could feel getting up at 515am had been worth the bother. Time for a big ass hamburger on the way home! Next up - Sylvan Lake, my first ~longer~ race.

Matt.

3rd Annual Prologue Results

Well, the 'tailwind' part didn't turn out at all, but the race went ahead as planned and 5 dudes took to the start line ready to dig deep and rely on that suitcase of courage to get them to the finish.

With a decent downhill to start things off, the hard headwind was tolerable, however, with the last 2km a shallow acent, the gears seemed to keep clicking up and up?!?!

Results (8km):
Mike Healy................12:18
Steve German............11:47
Alex Shaw.................11:34
Frank Woolstencroft....11:32
Trev Williams.............10:32

To give you an idea, here ar ethe LAST three riders in the Tour's times:
187 Wim Vansevenant (Bel) Predictor - Lotto................10:22
188 Danilo Napolitano (Ita) Lampre - Fondital................10:23
189 Ruben Lobato Elvira (Spa) Saunier Duval - Prodir.......10:41

No shows included Carl and Kirk who swore they would be there, and Jared and Gary.

Super fun, too bad the turn out was lackluster.

7.9km Prologue Repeated Sun. July 8th.

Guys, we've done this the past few years and it was super fun.

A 7.9km straight, tailwind, slightly downhill TT. Compare times to TdF riders from the day before. It's awesome !!

Sunday, July 8th, 8am, meet at the Petro-Can ready to ride. The Petro-Can just leaving town if you were to drive to Banff. Right at the bottom of COP.
Ride out to just past the SpringBank Airport.
Turn around. Official starts at 30second intervals.
I will see if I can get a timer to officially log times.
Ride back. Should be a quick ride, so you can get on with your day.

Results will be posted as soon as I get back from the ride/race.
